Ride for bigger purpose than
a personal best …
Can one really understand the challenges faced by disabled people? Yes, we
sympathise, we sometimes assist. But unless we put ourselves in their shoes,
we do not have a clue what they have to deal with on a daily basis.
Hands4Souls is a non-profit organisation founded to help disabled people. Our
dream is to lighten their burden by trying to satisfy some of their needs. Be it small
requests, equipment to improve their mobility or enable them to take part in sport.
Equipment for disabled people are specialised and for that reason quite expensive. When we learnt
about the astronomical financial outlay to purchase sports wheelchairs and specifically handcycles we
knew we had to get involved. A sports wheelchair will set you back R22,000 while a new handcycle can
cost a whopping R40,000 depending on the specification. How difficult it must be for any disabled
person to get started!
The Hands4Souls team members are all great cycling enthusiasts, ranging from pretty good cyclists to
mere novices and will participate in cycle races (road and mountain bike) across the country to promote
awareness and raise money for our cause.
The idea is to use our hands (resources) to touch the souls of the less fortunate. We can all help, by
using our talents, our resources, our network or our money to contribute, fulfil a need, give purpose or
reach a dream.
One of our founders, Frans Wiid, an able bodied person, imported a handcycle at his own expense. He
has started training on this cycle designed for disabled people. He will take part in cycling races to
raise money for the cause. Most people say "it is madness", therefore he chose the colour PURPLE,
known in handcycle circles as GRAPE MADNESS!
Because Frans started life out as an orphan himself, we have a passion to help orphans. Their needs are
even greater due to financial constraints and lack of support.
You can JOIN the team, DONATE money, SPONSOR a bike, any portion of a bike, a wheel chair, or
anything else on our Wish List or you can NOMINATE a disabled orphan or athlete to be considered for
our assistance.
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!
"Life is about how
you respond to not
only the challenges
you're dealt but the
challenges you seek …

no mountains to
climb,your soul
dies!!!"-Liz Fordred

Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong finished in the lead group in the
Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour around the Cape Peninsula on Sunday
The American star made a break inside the last kilometre of the 110km race to create
an opening for his Team RadioShack teammate Daryl Impey, a strong sprinter.
Lance's first Twitter message after the race stated: "Argus Cycle Tour done! What a
cool ride/race. Congrats to @darylimpey on gettin' 3rd. Wind was howling out there".
He later added: "And hats off to all the riders today. Won't be easy in that wind. Cold
beers tonight!"
He expressed surprise at the large number of cyclists.
